Manual 2 · Your Website · 2.16

You don't have to write it.
You can just say it.

Passed final You — from the truck

The blank box wins every time

You sat down to write the words for your own website. You opened the box where the text goes. And then you looked at it.

The cursor blinks. You know your trade cold. You've explained it a thousand times to a thousand customers who asked. But the second it's a blank box on a screen, none of it comes out. So you close the tab. You'll do it this weekend. You've been going to do it this weekend for a while now.

That's not a discipline problem. Writing from a blank box is one of the hardest ways to get words out of your head, and it's the wrong tool for you. You don't sell by typing. You sell by talking. So don't type.

Talk instead

Here's the whole trick: you already answer these questions out loud all day. A customer calls, asks what you do, whether you handle their kind of job, what it runs. You answer without thinking, in plain words, and they get it.

So do that. Out loud. Into your phone. Nobody's watching, there's no cursor, there's no box. You just talk like you're on the phone with a customer who asked a good question. That recording — the actual sound of you explaining your own work — is your raw copy. Every real sentence you need is already in it.

Talking pulls out the stuff that never survives the blank box: how you actually say it, the detail you always mention, the line that makes people trust you. Typing sands all that off. Your voice keeps it.

Your phone already has the recorder

You don't need an app, an account, or a paid tool. The recorder is already sitting on your phone.

A built-in voice recorder is standard on iPhone, Pixel, and Samsung phones. If you're on a Motorola or an off-brand budget Android, it's hit or miss — some have one, some don't. If yours doesn't, a free voice-recorder app is a one-tap download from the Play Store. Either way you're a tap away from recording, at no cost.

Open it. Hit record. Talk. That's all there is to it.

How to actually do it in one sitting

You don't have to nail it in one take. Ramble. Repeat yourself. Trail off and start the sentence over. The recording doesn't have to be clean — it has to be real. Right now you've got nothing. A rough, honest answer beats nothing every time.

Go question by question. Answer one out loud, stop, take a breath, start the next. If a question doesn't fit your trade, skip it. Take what works, leave the rest.

The recap: talk, don't type

The blank box is why your website copy never gets written. So skip the box. Open your phone's recorder, and answer these out loud, one at a time, the way you'd tell a customer standing in front of you:

Say it out loud, one at a timesix questions

Six answers, said out loud, no typing. When you're done, you've got a recording full of your own real words about your own work. That's your raw copy — the hard part, done, in the one place the blank box could never reach.

This page is free to use and share, like the whole manual. The recorder on your phone works the same whether or not you ever hire anyone, including us.
